Politically all the archipelago belongs to the Balboa District of Panama Province. It was named during the Spaniard Conquest due to the abundance of pearls in the area.

Here it was found the famous Peregrin Pearl was found, owned by Felipe II, and later it was also owned by Elizabeth Taylor.

The lodge offers tours to the rainforest, river, mangroves, waterfall, Ukupseni (Playon Chico) community, cemetery and to other uninhabited islands with palm trees and white sand beach. Tours and meals are included in the package.

It has six cabins over the water and four seafront cabins equiped with private bathrooms, double and single beds with orthopedic mattresses and mosquito nets, ceiling fans, 24 hour electricity powered by solar panels, hammocks and a 360° balcony with an incredible view.

The island also features a dining room over the water, with fresh local seafood, fish, vegetables and fruits, with a 180° view to the sea, uninhabited islands, mangroves, mainland and the Playon Chico communiry. We have Kuna boats for traditional fishing and traditional sailing.

You can lay in a hammock, relax and enjoy the stunning view. Go to the beach, swim and do some snorkeling. Experience rowing or sailing in a Kuna indian canoe or do traditional fishing. You can go hiking in the rainforest until you reach the small waterfall or visit the Kuna cemetery and learn about rituals and traditions. Meet a Kuna community and buy some handicrafts and molas directly from the Kuna women. Visit the mangroves, go to the river and enjoy the flora and fauna of the area.

Adventures Tours

Subject to wheather, physical conditions, program and preferences.

Visit Nearby Inhabited islands

We will take you to uninhabited islands nearby where you can spend the morning snorkeling, swimming, exploring or simply relaxing . These beaches, like the one at Yandup, are from coral origin, white sand and crystal clear water.

Visit the Community

You can learn more about everyday life in the community and the architecture of the houses, constructed with local materials. But you can also go for a walk to see the congress house (Onmaket Nega) where the community members hold their daily meetings and sing traditional and religious songs.

And you can see the Chicha house (Inna Nega) where the traditional rites are performed to celebrate the "chicha fuerte" in different ceremonies.

A sale of handicraft is established in the community for the benefit of the locals. You can acquire such famous handicraft articles as the "molas" and other objects such as wicker baskets and figures made of mahogany, "balso", "espave", "amarillo" and other materials.

Visit the Mangrove

Enjoy a pleasant promenade by the mangroves, on the islands or the coasts, known by the Kunas as home of the sardines. You can distinguish the red, black and white mangrove. The eco-system of the mangroves serves as a spawning area for many aquatic animals, as the larvae and other small species are reproduced here and protected by the roots.

These forests are the habitat for a immense variety of fishes of alimentary value, crayfish and "guabinas" (fish from the river), and other wild animals such as the heron and the pelican. It also serves as a resting area for many migratory birds.

Hike the Forest

The major part of the area is covered by primary forests with an immense diversity of flora and fauna.

Many of the flora species found are used by the Kunas as forestry products for the construction of houses, boats, tools, artisan's work and medicine. The very few alterations that the forest has faced makes it very attractive to ecologists and scientists, as well as for adventurers. There is also a huge amount of wild mammals, reptiles, insects and birds in the forest

River Tour

Diiwar Dummad or Diiwarak river, near Playon Chico can be a fauna visual show: birds, caymans, amphibian, etc. Depending on the weather we will visit the river at the afternoon when most animals return to their homes and a perfect environment is created for observation.

The marine birds can be observed from the island of Yandup, but for a greater diversity the visitor can get up in the early morning and observe the birds at daybreak from a boat in the river. "Tangaras", hummingbirds, gulls, woodpeckers, parrots, macaws, toucans, and pelicans are some of the species of birds that you can encounter.

Accommodations

Tranquilo Bay is an owner-operated eco adventure lodge located on Isla Bastimentos, Bocas del Toro, Panama. We specialize in all-inclusive adventure eco tours and rejuvenation. Our secluded facility was designed to remove you from pressures of the real world and to comfortably immerse you in one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet.

Tranquilo Bay is adjacent to Bastimentos National Marine Park. We have over a kilometer of Caribbean coastline covered in coral gardens teaming with tropical fish. Our facilities encompass over 110 acres and three ecosystems, with over a mile of hiking trails full of wildlife. At least 75% of the acreage has been left to evolve in its natural state. Extreme biodiversity of flora and fauna, tropical rainforest, primary growth mangrove forest, incredible coral reef, and the Caribbean Sea are here for your onsite exploration.

Cabanas

The interior of each of our cabanas is tastefully and comfortably appointed with air-conditioning, local hardwoods, tile floors, fine linens and a calming color palette.

Each bedroom features a bed or beds, handcrafted for Tranquilo Bay, made from local hardwoods with an orthopedic mattress. Reading lamps and various books are also found within each bedroom. A small seating area adjacent to one of the windows and a closet round out the remainder of the bedroom.

The spacious granite countertop provides you with plenty of room for your belongings. Each bathroom includes a large walk-in shower with a full size water heater. Coffee makers, hair dryers and snack baskets are also located within the bathroom.

A covered porch with a hammock, Adirondack chairs and a ceiling fan await to help you escape the "every day" that you left behind when you enter the grounds at Tranquilo Bay.

Four cabanas have a breathtaking ocean view. Two cabanas have a luscious tropical jungle view.

Main Lodge

The Main Lodge is where meals and indoor recreational activities take place. The ocean view and elevation over the jungle canopy are incredible. Our upstairs balcony is the perfect place to watch the sun rise with your morning coffee and the moon rise in the evening with a cold beverage. The monkeys and birds also travel through on their late afternoon feeding migration.

The interior of the main lodge building includes the dining room, the bar and an entertainment room which includes a television and a large book and video library.

On the second floor of the main lodge building a large porch wraps around two sides of the building giving you a bird's eye view into the jungle and of the Caribbean beyond.

The view from the main lodge building is exquisite. We built the building itself up so that you would be in the tree tops looking out onto the property, the animals and the ocean. There is no better vantage point in Bocas del Toro for relaxing and taking in the view than the second floor of this building.

Dining

Meals at Tranquilo Bay are included with each of our packages. Breakfast offerings may include a continental buffet, your choice of eggs and one special breakfast entree each day. Lunch will be packed for those guests whose activities keep them away from the resort. For those remaining on site, a variety of soups, salads and sandwiches are available. Appetizers are provided during the cocktail hour preceding dinner. Dinners vary based upon the local ingredients available; however you should expect three or four delicious courses each night.

Breakfast will include fruit juices, Panamanian coffee and rolls. You may request eggs made to order each morning. We will also provide one special breakfast entree each day.

A delicious lunch will be packed for those partaking in off site activities for the day. For those remaining on site, we have a selection of salads, sandwiches and soups which highlight local ingredients - avocados and hearts of palm for example.

Prior to dinner each night, we have a cocktail hour to watch the sunset and enjoy delicious nibbles.

The dinner menu is posted each day at breakfast. If you would prefer another entree you may select from a few offerings and notify us at lunch or prior to your departure for your day's activities. Entrees vary nightly - one night we may serve seafood and the next night it may be South American beef. Each night we end with a little something sweet to close the day.

Excursions

Tranquilo Bay is fortunate to have a incredible number of excursions for the outdoor enthusiast. We can tailor your trip if you have a particular activity that you would like to experience. Certain activities like surfing and turtle nesting are seasonal, so let us know what interests you prior to booking your trip.

Fishing

The secluded western Caribbean coast of Panama is wild and undeveloped, which is exactly what makes fishing these waters so remarkable. The fishing in Bocas del Toro is world class, not world famous, we rarely see another angler. Come fish with us and let exotic wildlife and big fish, surrounded by a surreal untouched landscape, create the fishing experience of a lifetime.

Tranquilo Bay has pioneered fishing Bocas del Toro's virgin estuaries, flats, rivers, and offshore waters. Most of the areas we fish are protected reserves and home to a variety of game fish such as Tarpon, Snook, Bonefish, Jack Crevalle, Barracuda, Tuna, Wahoo, King Mackerel, snappers, and groupers.

We encourage you to bring your family; Tranquilo Bay was designed to make everyone in your group comfortable. Our well-appointed facility is sure to please even the most discriminating of tastes, and we offer an array of adventure activities for the non-fishermen in your group, to explore the natural beauty of Panama's islands and rainforest, from the coral reef to the cloud forest.

Tranquilo Bay is Panama's most deluxe and unique Caribbean fishing adventure, we specialize in intimate groups of 2 to 8 anglers to explore the most secluded and un-fished waters in Central America. We hope to put you on the fish of a lifetime soon.

Local fishermen in Bocas del Toro fish year-round for snapper, jacks and barracuda. When pursuing game fish the most consistent months are March through May and September through mid November. The Caribbean Sea in Panama tends to have waves, and more wind during the peak of winter and summer.

Seasonal offshore runs include Yellowfin, Blackfin, and Bigeye Tuna, Wahoo, Kingfish and big Yellowtail Snapper. Resident bottom fish in these waters consist of various grouper species, and snapper including Cuberas, Grays, Dogs, Blacks and Muttons. Whale Sharks, dolphins, and sea turtles are sometimes spotted in these pristine waters.

All fishing is done with light tackle on outfits ranging from 8-pound to 30-pound test line. We have both conventional and spinning tackle consisting of Shimano, Ande, and Falcon graphite rods equipped with Shimano reels. We also have a few fly-casting outfits with 9, 10 and 12 weight rods.

While fishing from Tranquilo Bay, we will use trolling, jigging, artificial bait casting, sight casting, fly casting, live bait and chumming techniques to catch a wide range of game fish.
