Embera Village

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Embera Indian village, which despite being touristy (as in being visited by lots of other tourists at the same time as me) was respectful, informative and joyful. The dances and food were a celebration of cultural pride, the crafts beautiful and the atmosphere open. These are not forgotten or underprivileged people, but educated and talented families that have made a conscious choice to retain their culture and protect the rainforest while being fully modern Panamanian citizens. Well organized, physically undemanding, affordable - a perfect day trip from Panama City.

Nice guys picked six of us up at the airport, had food (empenadas?) ready for us. We stopped and got some fruit and headed on a long drive to get to our canoes and then up river to the Indian village. The native Indians made us a spectacular lunch and told us about their lifestyle. They also showed us some ceremonial dances and got the group involved with the dance. A very interesting experience.
